Most speakers in a home theater system are not capable of reproducing deep bass frequencies, such as those found in explosions, car crashes, and thunder. This is where a subwoofer comes in, as its primary function is to reproduce these low frequencies, creating realistic sound levels and adding depth to the overall audio experience. Without the proper bass response, the audio can sound weak or hollow, which can negatively impact the spatial cues and overall immersion of the film. Even if the main speakers in a system are large, they may not be able to reproduce the extremely deep bass found in movie recordings, making a subwoofer an essential component for achieving a truly realistic and immersive home theater experience.

Most home audio systems only have one subwoofer to accommodate the LFE (Low-Frequency Effects) channel’s bass needs. In a 5.1 system, this would be designated as channel “.1,” while the other 5 channels are made up of a left, right, and center channel up front, 2 surround channels at the side or rear, depending on how the room is set up, and a subwoofer. When speakers are unable to reach the low frequencies found in the other 5 channels, the subwoofer handles them in addition to the LFE effects. You program the system and choose whether the speakers are “small” or “big” in your modern (or older) surround sound processors. The full-range speakers with the “big” label may reproduce frequencies as low as 30Hz or thereabouts.
