Viewsonic M2 Review – The Handy Projector

Though the DLP chip’s native resolution is just 1,920×1,080 and the brightness and contrast ratio is too low for meaningful HDR performance, the Viewsonic M2 is 4K and HDR capable. Interestingly, it does function with 3D inputs. Although ViewSonic’s website is out of supply, there are substitutes on Amazon that ought to function.

The M2 doesn’t utilize a UHP (ultra high pressure) light, unlike the majority of home projectors. Instead, LEDs are used. LED-based projectors have advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, the M2 has a 30,000-hour lifespan rating, which translates to around 20 years if you watch it four hours every day. That is a lot longer than the UHP bulbs with the highest lifespan.

Brightness, though, is the price to pay. The M2 is claimed at 1,200 lumens when many projectors in this price range are rated to 3,000 or more; nevertheless, I measured what works out to 349 (it’s typical for a projector to measure less than what it says). This isn’t a deal breaker right away because the M2 wasn’t designed to fill a home theater-sized screen, but it does affect the quality of the images.

The M2 has a single HDMI input, which is HDMI 2.0, though the projector can only display 1080p. Having only one HDMI input isn’t really a limitation with any projector, especially not one like this with multiple other ways to receive content. The USB-A connector has enough power to easily run a streaming stick, like Roku or Amazon Fire TV, if you don’t want to use the internal apps. If you have a device that’s capable of sending video over USB-C, the M2 can accept that and display it. Double-check that your phone can before you consider this as an option.

The audio system of the M2 was co-developed by Harman Kardon, as shown by a badge on the side. Even though two speakers only have three watts of power each, which isn’t much, they can fill a small space and sound fairly decent for their size. You may also link a Bluetooth speaker to the M2 as an alternative.

Once turned on, the M2’s rapid autofocus capability is one of its best qualities. You may start enjoying your entertainment as soon as the test image comes into focus, which should only take a few seconds. At a projection distance of around 2 meters, you can achieve an 80″ screen, which is a respectable size. Of course, increasing the screen size will start to reduce the brightness and quality of the image.

    Excellent audio and visual quality

    By Charu Kashyap

    Overall Experience:

Excellent audio and visual quality; I really enjoyed using it to watch movies in my bedroom. But it’s best to only use it as a display device; don’t expect it to have any smart features; the OS and App are shoddy and temperamental, and WiFi and Bluetooth are unstable. Instead, connect a Chromecast, Firestick, or even a laptop to an HDMI port; you’ll love it!
