Epson EH-LS12000B Review – 4K ProCinema Laser Projector

The Epson EH-LS12000B is the only 4K projector you need to consider if you’re seeking for one of the top models available. This device has potent technology that casts a nearly unbeatable image. Epson has focused solely on the picture side of the equation at the expense of leaving you to fend for yourself in terms of video and audio sources, which comes at a predictably high price. The Epson Pro Cinema LS12000B is the only 4K projector you need to consider if you’re seeking for one of the top models available. Epson has focused solely on the picture side of the equation at the expense of leaving you to fend for yourself in terms of video and audio sources, which comes at a predictably high price.

It’s also simple to achieve the vivid and sharp pictures just way we want them. We all need to position the projector where we want it before moving and repositioning the image to achieve the ideal size and location using the zoom, lens shift, focus, and keystone controls. Since this is a genuine home theatre projector, we wouldn’t advise going all out for a tiny space, but there is a lot of versatility for large and even larger rooms.

Design

Design

The EH-LS12000B is a sturdy, well-made piece of home entertainment equipment. Its size is greater than most coffee tables would be comfortable with, as we’ve come to anticipate from laser projectors with real home cinema intentions. This tells you that a projector like this should be permanently housed in a dedicated home theater room. It is not one of those unimportant projectors that is only stored in a cabinet when not in use. Thanks to a unique textured black finish that is wrapped around a body and smooths down pretty much all rough edges, it wears its bulk very neatly.

The projector’s front edge has a massive, frightening lens in the center that is hidden when it is not in use by a pair of automatic sliding doors. A pair of serious-looking vents that appear to have the capacity to manage heat from the laser illumination without, hopefully, requiring cooling fans to run too noisily are tucked into the “wings” of the front edge.

Picture Quality

Picture Quality

The Epson LS12000B is not a “native” 4K projector; instead, it combines 1,920 x 1,080 LCD panels with a shifting optical element to produce a “on screen” equivalent of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels using a dual-axis shift. Epson continues to employ 1,920 x 1,080 LCD panels for imaging responsibilities. This implies that while the projector won’t completely resolve single-pixel 4K patterns, it will nonetheless deliver almost 4K clarity on most displays from a reasonable viewing distance. It is a little sad that Epson’s consumer projectors have not yet entered the native 4K display market. However, at this time, no other projector manufacturers are providing native 4K models at this cost.

A new laser diode array with a stated brightness of 2,700 lumens is used by Epson’s laser light engine. That’s a lot of light for the majority of consumer-size screens to work with. The ability to dim the laser from 100% output to 50% output in 5 percent increments is available from the main menu. Even so, I wish Epson had added a lens aperture, allowing for fine-tuning the light output using a combination of iris and laser control to reach higher contrast levels. The Epson does a fantastic job minimizing operating noise. At up to 75% output, it is incredibly quiet. At about 80% and higher, I began to hear air rushing, although it wasn’t particularly loud and would have been virtually undetectable in the presence of any other noise in the space.

Conclusion

Is the Epson LS12000 going to change everything as we had hoped? We believe it may be. Sure, the lack of 3D, dynamic tone mapping, and auto iris came as a shock at first; for some, even one of those features could prompt them to immediately write the LS12000B off. But when it comes down to it, this projector has a lot of positive qualities. For a projector without an auto iris, the Dynamic Contrast setting does produce deep blacks, and HDR can look amazing. Additionally, it supports gaming in 4K/120 Hz and boasts the lowest input lag of any modern high-end home theater projector with that capabilities.
