Denon PMA1600 NE Review – Integrated Amplifier

The PMA-1600NE is a stereo Class-AB power amplifier that features two sets of speaker terminals and a dedicated subwoofer output. The amplifier comes with a built-in phono stage and RIAA curve as well as a high-quality DAC with dual differential inputs and a built-in headphone amplifier. The PMA-1600NE also comes with volume attenuators that offer several additional functions besides volume control. They can be used to select inputs, adjust bass and treble levels, activate the headphone amplifier and mute the amplifier. The amplifier has two line-level inputs, one of which has a switch that allows the user to select between a phono and a line input.

The Denon PMA-1600NE is a special amplifier. It combines the performance, build and features of much more expensive models in a compact, affordable package in most markets. This isn’t the first time that Denon has released an affordable integrated amp with these kind of features. The original PMA-1600 was introduced back in 2011 and was one of the first products to combine a Class-AB power amp, dual differential inputs and built-in DSD decoding into a integrated amplifier. It also featured volume attenuators with on/off switches instead of standard potentiometers for added user convenience. However, it had some drawbacks as well. The new PMA-1600NE addresses those issues and comes with several additional features besides – all at virtually the same price point.

    Overall Experience:

This amp is a lot of amp for the money and is still breaking in. I’ve owned a number of amps and have returned them all because I didn’t like them, but the Denon is growing on me and sounds warm, balanced, and punchy.
