Cambridge Audio Edge A Review – Integrated Amplifier

A built-in amplifier is the Cambridge Audio Edge A. This is encouraging because the company has typically performed quite well when it comes to integrated amplifiers. However, it differs significantly from any Cambridge Audio amp we have previously seen for two reasons. From this part of the text body, the first ought to be readily apparent.

The Edge A features a different variety of inputs than any Cambridge Audio amplifier that has come before, which is the second difference. Evidently, there are many models out there with digital inputs, and Cambridge Audio has enthusiastically contributed to this development. The Edge A stands out because it features a connection that we still don’t see all that frequently on stereo devices, especially not at this price point. Until recently, at least, the amps with digital inputs have been at the lower end of the pricing spectrum. Cambridge Audio has ceased production of AV Receivers after many years, and it appears that the Edge A, although not a real successor, might be viewed as a descendant.

Our Verdict

Design

The simple elegance of the Cambridge Edge A Integrated amplifier is stunning. At first glance, it could seem incredibly straightforward, but as you examine more closely how form and function interact, you start to appreciate the engineering aesthetics of the Edge A. So, putting aside my initial, brow-raising views, there is a lot to learn about this amp.

Sound Quality

Sound Quality

With this composition, the Cambridge demonstrates its impressive ability. Thanks to a level of clarity and control that is difficult to match for the price, this amp can track low-level musical strands with ease.

The Edge has a good sense of balance tonally. It has a balance that is a little fuller and smoother than what would be deemed completely neutral, but it is not overly skewed to cause a problem. In fact, the intended balance allows this amp to be sufficiently transparent with better recordings while still being relatively kind to recordings of lower quality. The stereo image is nicely wide-ranging. This integrated creates a vast sound stage and fills it with precise and concentrated instrumentation. This consistency is pleasing, and the amp keeps the sounds in place even when the music gets challenging.

Conclusion

Although Cambridge Audio’s Edge A may struggle to drive extremely sensitivity speakers to rock-approved volumes and had very decent but not exceptional bass, for the majority of users, it will be a more than adequate integrated DAC for any imaginable application. The Edge A’s completely captivating midrange and beautiful, prolonged highs make it my preferred choice above Anthem’s similarly priced STR Integrated for easy reproduction of two-channel records. The Anthem, however, would probably be a better option if I had a room with frequency-response issues or wanted to incorporate one or more subwoofers into my system. The Edge A, on the other hand, is a superb integrated DAC with the elusive, occasionally ephemeral, and ethereal sound attributes of a true high-end component that will undoubtedly win audiophiles over.
