Anthem STR Preamplifier Review

The STR series of devices was developed by Anthem, a company whose roots are in two-channel, in order to serve as a reminder to audiophiles. We asked for a closer look at Anthem’s STR preamp and power amp separates stack in order to better grasp how they handle two-channel music. These items are offered in silver and black, and they are ALL handcrafted in Canada using the best engineering practises. In addition to making my equipment rack’s decor match, We asked for black review samples because We believed they would look more menacing in that shade. I’m going to try out the STR items to see whether they live up to the hype and start up my two-channel mojo.

For a two-channel preamp, the Anthem STR Preamp has a large selection of I/O connectors. This product is equipped with a complete set of balanced and unbalanced inputs and outputs, Toslink and coax, a USB DAC, and a balanced digital input (a uncommon option). In addition to allowing for firmware upgrades, the network connection makes setting up the Anthem ARC room correction device simple because it eliminates the need to connect the calibration microphone directly to the device. Very smooth. Despite appearances, the top plate is more rigid. No detail was overlooked in the construction of this item, even the radiused edges on the front panel.

Design

Design

The chassis is frequently the most expensive component of high-end electronic products, and STR components will make you feel as though you got your money’s worth because of their industrial design, which exudes a sense of stability and understated beauty. The two components have a similar physical factor and are both offered in silver or black finishes. A few controls are located on the front panel’s gently convex right side, while the left side is dominated by a TFT (thin-film-transistor) LCD display. One for each channel of the amplifier’s fake VU metres is amusing for a week or two, but you’ll probably decide to turn them off eventually. However, the STR preamplifier’s display is a key selling point.

From the onscreen “Preferences” menu, the user chooses between two settings, “All” or “Volume.” The former shows the gain level in the center of the display with other useful information at the four corners—the input selected, the format and sampling rate for digital sources, mono vs. stereo, and whether ARC is activated. With the latter setting, only the volume level is displayed, in three-quarters-of-an-inch-high numbers that are easy to read from across a darkened room or in broad daylight.

Two powered subwoofers can be connected to the STR Preamplifier using balanced XLR or RCA cables. Either set them up as separate left- and right-channel subs, or set each sub to contain the combined bass from the two channels. This preamp provides sophisticated bass control. Your crossover point will be selected for you by Anthem Room Correction, but you can also manually modify the low-pass filter frequency if you wish to make any adjustments.

Anthem is aware that you might want to play music on your front speakers and subwoofers other than stereo. You may link your home theatre processor’s left, right, and subwoofer outputs to the STR Preamplifier and then connect the preamp’s equivalent outputs to your amplifier and subwoofers. When the STR Preamplifier is connected in this fashion, you may simply switch the preamp to “Standby” (off) when you wish to watch a movie, and the audio signals will proceed as expected. RCA and balanced XLR connections are compatible with this capability. Really cool

Conclusions

One of the most stable and lively-sounding amplifiers I’ve heard is the STR preamplifier, and due to its neutrality, it will be very widely applicable. It is impossible to not be impacted by the music when the STR components are combined since they deliver it with such impact, drive, and unrestrained live-music-like enthusiasm.
