Naim Mu-so 2nd Generation Review – Wireless Speaker

The first Mu-so wireless music system from Naim Audio was a powerful high-performance music system. The Mu-so 2nd Generation significantly redesigns the game. It plays high-resolution audio files with astounding precision, including those from HDtracks, your Spotify® playlists, and TIDAL’s lossless streaming service. Use Bluetooth to wirelessly stream directly from your smartphone. Through the Naim app, Apple AirPlay 2, or Google Chromecast, the Mu-So 2nd Generation can also be a part of a multi-room audio system.

The flagship Mu-So connected Hi-Fi speaker from Naim underwent a complete overhaul. What was already a powerful speaker gets much better in its second iteration. The original Naim Mu-So made its debut more than five years ago. Naim hasn’t sat back and enjoyed its success in the years since. The Mu-So 2 was rigorously redesigned in its place. In spite of the outward resemblance, the Mu-So 2 is actually 95% fresh on the inside. Everything has been enhanced, including the controls, connectivity, and the controls’ polished design. We didn’t look for a second generation after publishing our review of the first. However, now that we know, we’re glad it’s here.

In our reviews, on-device controls are rarely given much attention, but the Mu-so 2’s off-center dial deserves more than a passing nod. You may adjust the volume, change sources, and choose the preset music to play using an upgraded touch control panel surrounded by a silky-smooth lighted dial.

The Naim app allows you to establish up to five presets, such as albums, playlists, or radio stations. You can wake the display with your palm and illuminate the symbols so they are ready for use thanks to a proximity sensor.

Although the Mu-so 2’s clear stylistic ancestry, there are distinguishing characteristics that set it apart from the original. The front wave-like grille, which is now available in black, terracotta, olive, and peacock (blue), has a new nylon and polyester knit fabric that Naim claims improves sound sensitivity by about 1db in the midrange. The aluminium chassis has a new burnished grey finish.

Sound Quality

The Mu-so 2nd Generation features six custom-designed built-in speakers for full, accurately detailed sound. It has two silk dome tweeters for clear highs, two dedicated drivers for articulate midrange, and two oval bass drivers in a ported enclosure for clean, robust lows.

Each speaker is powered by its own 75-watt Class D amplifier, ensuring minimal cross-interference and finely detailed sound. And with 450 watts total system power, that sound can easily fill even large rooms without distortion.

Conclusion

Its predecessor, the Naim Mu-so Qb, was a no-brainer, but the Naim Mu-so Qb 2nd Generation isn’t quite as obvious now that other companies, including B&W, have started producing wireless speakers with similar price tags.

It is simple to set up and use, has amazing appearance, and amazing sound. Even while its somewhat higher price point makes it even more “aspirational” than before, it is still a powerful performer and a desirable object.

Awesome sound quality but connection issues are a constant

    Overall Experience:

Good sound and simplicity of use. The setup had a few issues, but I was able to fix them with my modest computer skills.
