Arcam ST60 Review – Streamer

An audio streamer for networks is the Arcam ST60. In 2021, this product is comparatively uncommon. In two-channel audio, network streaming now dominates (and video, for that matter). It has nevertheless done so without developing as much specialised hardware as you might anticipate. CD players are not streamers. Companies can integrate a streaming board into an amplifier without depleting the amplifier’s internal resources significantly. This is also true of Arcam. The SA30 is a fully functional network audio player, which is how it managed to win the Editor’s Choice Award for “Best All-in-One System” in 2020, despite Arcam’s desire to refer to it as an amplifier.

As a result, the ST60 is a unique addition to the Arcam lineup because it will gladly function with other amplifiers that might be useful to a few people. The ST60 has its work cut out for it, of course. Although its functionality appears to be relatively similar to that of the Bluesound Node, it costs more than twice as much. Is the ST60 a rather pricey anachronism or is there a reason to prefer the large standalone streamer when this is there hiding like a £549 wedge of excellence and the idea of a dedicated network music player looks threatened by gadgets like the iFi Zen Stream?

Given the relatively modest height of the device, the Arcam ST-60 Streamer’s front features a display that is generously sized in the centre. But in the end, the height limits the display, making it seem relatively small in comparison to other options in this class. The main details, including the cover art, may still be read without any difficulty despite this.

The primary switch and a status LED are located to the right and left of the display, respectively, and a very sturdy rotary encoder is located to the left of the display. These four controls, which are used to change parameters and manage playback, should be adequate for managing the Arcam ST-60 Streamer directly on the device.

Sound Quality

As a result, it has a performer with exceptional potential who has entered the music streaming market. The ST60 delivers with confidence and is huge, full, solid, and expressive. Jason from Perfume Genius comes through our speakers with piercing clarity and a pleasingly wide, open soundscape. His falsetto voice is lush and beautiful, and the bassline and harpsichord at the start of the song are equally present and nicely textured. Thanks to the ST60’s tone, muscularity, and clarity—sonic qualities we’ve come to anticipate from Arcam products over the years—an it’s engaging rendering that’s simple to dig into.

The atmospheric echo surrounding the drums can be more effectively captured by the ST60’s richer, crisper delivery. Through the Arcam, the thorny synths and percussion also get more dimension in terms of their shape, texture, and overall musical pattern. This kind of experimental instrumentation depends on its capacity to grab your interest and hold it, and the Arcam does this better thanks to its higher detail, dynamic understanding, and better timing.

Conclusion

The new Arcam ST60 streaming DAC was simple to use and enjoyable to listen to. The sound quality was excellent for the price. However, products like this are a strong argument in favour of streaming. It is shockingly economical, has excellent quality, and performs the majority of the tasks I would want a streamer to perform. Arcam’s ST60 may be at the top of my list if and when I need to make a decision.
