Paradigm Premier 800F Review – Floorstanding Speaker

Since we haven’t had the chance to test out some speakers from Paradigm in a while, it appears that the moment has finally come. And in today’s Paradigm Premier 800F review, we’ll take a look at one of the floorstanders from their middle-class Premier series that was introduced in 2018 and received generally positive feedback from both users and reviewers. Prior to release, Paradigm had a significant price difference between its high-end Prestige series and its more affordable Monitor SE lineup. The Premier speakers fit in here, too. The Premier speakers, which are more expensive than the Monitor SE but less expensive than the Prestige, attempt to strike the ideal balance between low cost and superior quality by utilising some of the technologies found in the more expensive models.

There is something for everyone in the full lineup, which includes two floorstanders, the 800F and 700F, two bookshelves, the 200B and 100B, and two centre speakers, the 500C and 600C. With regard to the Paradigm Premier 800F that we will be examining today, the fact that it is the larger floorstander in the series tends to raise expectations because this speaker has more to aim for than just closing the gap in Paradigm’s product line.

Our Verdict

For better or worse, the Premier 800F produces remarkably realistic music with monitor-like precisions in part because Paradigm incorporated a number of new technological advancements into this chic floorstander.

Design

Design

The design analysis of the 800F speakers will begin first, followed by a discussion of the 500C. The 800F speakers are three-way ported tower speakers that feature a 1″ aluminium dome tweeter and two 6.5″ bass drivers. Polypropylene cones with inverted ART surrounds are used for both the mid-range and bass drivers. Active Ridge Technology, or ART, is the name Paradigm has given to its proprietary surround design that employs pleated “ribbing” down the length of the surround. ART is said to provide more headroom than traditional half-roll designs. The high stress that results from stretching conventional surrounds at high excursions, especially during the inward-stroke, can create deformations that can lead to distortion or even tears in the surround.

According to Paradigm, their ridged surround design avoids these deformations by concentrating material stress at locations that can handle it better because of the surround’s shape. According to Paradigm, ART provides a 3 dB gain in headroom for the same surround roll by allowing 1.5 times the excursion.

I placed the speakers in my about 24 by 13-foot listening room with stand-off distances from the back and side walls and an equal distance between them and the listening position, with the speakers tipped inward at an angle instructed by the user manual. The speakers were around 9 feet away from the listener. A Pioneer Elite SC-55 handled processing and amplification. No equalisation for room correction was applied. Subwoofers were occasionally utilised to enhance the bass with an 80 Hz crossover frequency.

Conclusion

There are several appealing features of the Paradigm 800F floorstanders. They sound musically authentic in the first place, with a big, generous, and welcoming sound that gives anything from classical symphonies to hard rockers complete justice.

However, there is also a lot of understanding and attention to detail, ensuring that the Paradigms are able to delve deeper into the music and draw out more than simply notes and rhythms. The combination of excellent control, a tonal range wide enough to bring life to the bottom notes, and upper trebles that gleam with authenticity results in a musically gifted and thoroughly engaging speaker that can compete with speakers that cost much more.
