BenQ W1700M Review – The Native 4K Projector

However, the BenQ W1700M upscale performs a respectable job of replacing the missing pixels, maintaining a clear tone in the white threads of Odin’s aged beard or the Norwegian grass blades. Though expected, it’s not nearly as sharp and clear as native 4K material. The way this projector handles motion, however, is one area where it falls short. During hectic situations, there is a lack of visual steadiness. The BenQ W1700 HDR capabilities are “supercharged with HDR10 compatibility,” according to the manufacturer. HDR10 is the most popular type of HDR.

A product must have a BT.2020 colour space in order to comply with that standard, however, the W1700 is unable to accurately reproduce that colour spectrum. Even though this projector can accept an HDR10 signal from your Ultra HD Blu-rays or streaming services, the entire spectrum of colours won’t be shown. There is a 5W speaker integrated inside the projector for audio, however we usually advise using some excellent speakers and an amplifier in addition to the projector’s modest drivers.

Our Verdict

Verdict

In comparison to other theatre projectors, the BenQ W1700 is remarkably outstanding considering its low price. The BenQ W1700 4K projector delivers excellent value for the money and competes favourably with more costly versions.

Highlights

  • The W1700 features a contrast ratio of 10,000:1 and a brightness of 2200 ANSI Lumens.
  • 709 HDTV standard for better color accuracy.
  • It also surprisingly supports 3D (active), but only at a maximum resolution of 1080p.
  • The W1700 uses Texas Instrument’s 0.47 DMD chip, which has a maximum resolution of 1920×1080 pixels.
  • The W1700 uses pixel shifting to then map an image four times on the screen, thus creating a 4K image.
  • Projector purists may have an issue with this pixel mapping, but for everyday projector users this is hardly an issue, and it most certainly is never visible onscreen.

The W1700 weighs just more than 4 kg and is roughly the size of a big purse, so it should sit comfortably on your coffee table. The lamp is advertised to produce 2200 lumens and has a lifespan of 4,000 hours, while BenQ claims that the W1700 has a contrast ratio of 10,000:1. It also contains the typical projector connectors, including a PC input, two HDMI ports, and a USB Type-A plug for charging streaming devices. The projector is quick and pretty simple to set up. Its settings are easy to navigate, and the remote, which has a convenient backlight option for usage at night, works nicely.

Sound Quality

The procedure of setting up the projector is simple. We find that many of the additional parameters, while available to customize the image to your surroundings, aren’t essential to obtain a good image. Pushing the parameters results in an unnaturally crisp and colorful image, while the flesh tone calibration makes rosy skin appear somewhat tanned. The W1700 displays a detailed image that is perceptive. Baby has a brown fringe that stands out against his pale face, and his glittery pink iPod shines beautifully with diamonds.

Conclusion

We were impressed by the BenQ W1700 considering its pricing. When it comes to extras like wifi networking, USB media playback, or even Dolby Vision support, it’s a little sparse. The black levels should potentially increase if your projection room is properly set up with darker materials, but they still won’t be as good as what you’d get from a TV. However, its fundamental performance is rock strong. Even on a 100-inch screen, the 4K HDR output of the BenQ W1700 was impressive, thus we would still argue that the advantages outweigh the drawbacks. The W1700 would work well if you want to put up a high-end big-screen home theatre without spending a lot of money.

Image quality of this projector is relative to price

    By Deepak Joshi

    Length of Use: 6–12 months

    Overall Experience:

I had a problem with the projector not recognizing sources when switching from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2. The picture quality is excellent for dim and gloomy rooms, and the color is amazing. There is just one 4K HDMI (HDMI 1), and there isn’t much of a visual difference between 4K and 1920 to warrant the price difference.
